Allie Thistlewood[]

Allie Thistlewood is the sister of Ernest Thistlewood and is first encountered in the first scenario of the Golden Realms campaign. Allie is cautious, firm, and careful--traits which seem at odds with the uncontrolled nature of her magical abilities, but which prove extremely useful in her task of resettling the dangerous interior of New Aldor. She is determined to protect her people, but remains concerned about the possibility that they may be forcing others aside on the way.

Ankhnaton Anarak[]

Leader of the Cult of Yaka, Ankhnaton Anarak is the ferocious driving force behind the reappearance of the Tigrans onto the world stage. Ankhnaton is convinced the Wizard-Kings are returning, enough to risk his entire people on a fiery crusade to turn the entirety of Athla into desert. He has devotion and fervor to match any theocrat, and is encountered in the second stage of the Eternal Lords campaign.

Argula Ironheart[]

Argula Ironheart is a Dreadnought in service of the Commonwealth. Little is known about her personality, but to get to her position she must be both extensively capable and willing to make hard decisions. Argula has been tasked with bringing civilization to the isolationist Rockshoal Isles in the name of the Commonwealth, and is perfectly willing to roll over anyone in the way of her mission.

It is unknown of her fate, as in The Rockshoal Isles the player is required to eliminate said leader in order to finish the scenario, while in Burn the Shadow it is not a requirement to eliminate her. Both scenarios are related to the Torchbearer path, although from different points of view.

Arvik the Dark[]

First encountered in the first scenario of the Eternal Lords campaign, Arvik the Dark is the last heir to the Frostling Clan Varnheim, traditionally charged with the defense of their borders--and thus forced to ruin on the anvil of the Commonwealth. In desperation, he has turned to unlikely--and unwholesome--allies to regain his clan's historical prominence... and in so doing stumbled into a threat to Athla on a global scale. Arvik is a bitter, brooding man, but one who is also driven in his determination and unquestionably loyal to his queen and his country.

Asshaqqa Marula[]

Awanesse the Custodian[]

Awanesse the Custodian is a Dark Elf who has placed herself in charge of monitoring Archon activity in the province of Kaerunn. Icy in demeanor and isolated in her habits, Awanesse has not left her vigil in hundreds of years, with one exception which she regrets (The Mending), and is not inclined to move for something as little as a war. She states that even the Commonwealth has left her to her own devices for the greater good, thus keeping herself Neutral to all parties.

While she is not keen on helping Sundren on her conquest, her initiates do offer some clues and help to guide them to a secret Storm Sister chamber who will summon monsters to aid her. Even if the player trespasses onto her territory, she will not turn on the player. If she were to be eliminated, a nearby Archon settlement would burst into activity, and armies of Archons will start to march against Sundren.

Baradir the Bald[]

Baradir the Bald is a warlord in the personal service of Emperor Leonus. Charged with defense of Stronghelm Province, Baradir knows the mountains and rocky rivers of the province better than anyone, and has set up an intricate defense network that no army can pierce with ease. In person he is a violent, controlling man--the very image of a drill sergeant at the head of his army, whipping it to follow him.

Birnhilda the Keeper[]

Bolmor the Silent[]

Encountered in the second scenario of the Golden Realms campaign, Bolmor the Silent leads a commune of dwarves in a volcanic region deep in the jungles near the halfling settlement of New Heartwood. Bolmor is a bit behind the times and completely uninterested in changing that any time soon; firmly isolationist, he is perfectly willing to let the world do whatever it wants so long as it doesn't interfere with his little world. If it does, there's going to be problems.

Bormac Orcbane[]

Bormac Orcbane is a historied hero down on his luck--betrayed by Brenn Grimdotter and held captive in a dungeon by Isabella van Heldon. He hails from the Rockwall Mountains far to the north, and desires nothing more than to return to his people. When not being imprisoned, Bormac is boisterious and intelligent, and ideal for the role of commanding a sanctuary in Rockwall.

While in the Torchbearer path he must be rescued from the dungeon, on the Elven Court path it is not a requirement. Still, the player can still clear said dungeon and rescue him, which will either offer the player with two options: free him and let him roam, or stab him.

Brenn Grimdotter[]

Brenn Grimdotter is a powerful Commonwealth theocrat who holds sway over the Rockwall Mountains, a rich and populous region in the north. She has some form of prior history with Bormac Orcbane, but she offers little information on it and Bormac is reluctant to go into detail. She is being assisted by Werlac of Insaldur, thus revealing her faction as a Shadowborn agent inside the Commonwealth.

Camille Moonflower[]

First encountered in the first scenario of the Golden Realms campaign, Camille Moonflower is scion of a powerful family of halfling traders. Calculating and direct, Camille is highly experienced in the ways of the outside world and is determined to gain leadership of the united expedition into New Aldor. That said, self-interest takes a backseat to overall responsibility in her mind, and while she's willing to do just about anything she has to, she's determined to make it for the right cause.

Carishar Morclaw[]

Carishar Morclaw is a blunt and dismissive sorcerer working in the blighted Sunbirth region. His extensive presence in such a remote location is suspicious by itself, and though he seems to be tied to the Commonwealth, how does he know so much about the activities of Edward Portsmith when Edward has never even heard of him? It is quickly revealed that he is nothing more than another agent in the service of the Shadowborn.

Cerren the Black[]

Cerrin Treefolk[]

Colm the Lucky[]

Colm the Lucky is a former mercenary who fought so many battles for the emperor's coin that he was granted noble titles. Ruthless, self-interested, and brutally opportunistic, Colm is a dangerous enemy to face and an unreliable friend to have. It is possible for Edward (The Commonwealth Campaign) to convince him to join his side against the Emperor.

Dolores the Hag[]

Drugal the Stout[]

Drugal the Stout is a master dreadnought operating from the Hengevolt region in tandem with Gustav Gorsmog. He served as the Dwarven representative at the Council of Origins, and his family has a long and storied history within the Empire, which gives him his wealth and privilege. Highly capable with machines, he is fascinated by the potential of new discoveries that Edward and Laryssa carry out of blighted Nirvenkiln...a little bit too much.

Dwemus Strongmouth[]

Dwemus Strongmouth is a devout follower of the Cult of the Emperor--so much so that he opted to go on mission to the blighted, remote Sunbirth region to preach the word. Dwemus has a talent for whipping people into fervor, and believes very strongly in the populist, multicultural spirit of the Commonwealth. That said, there is something dark about his words...

He is a prisoner inside Laryssa's city. He can only be freed if Edward chooses to execute Laryssa.

Edith the Grey[]

Edward Portsmith[]

The hero of the Commonwealth campaign, Edward Portsmith is a young, freshly-minted Imperial Dreadnought in service to the Commonwealth. Ambitious and calculating, Edward is also a fierce believer in the multiracial, egalitarian ideal of the Commonwealth, and a childhood friend of the Emperor's niece, Laryssa. He sets off on a task to crush a rebellion in the northern Commonwealth regions, but these things have a way of getting out of hand...

Ekko the Explosive[]

Ekko the Explosive appears in the Tutorial, and is the first antagonist new players will encounter. Claiming to have bought the sacred Isle of Aldor in the name of the Commonwealth, Ekko is busily undertaking the task of making it more pleasant to goblin life when Sundren and Werlac take notice, and offense. Ekko is honest and a bit guileless, but prejudiced against elves and the Elven Court.

Ernest Thistlewood[]

Ernest Thistlewood is the leader of the Thistlewood family and the protagonist of the Golden Realms campaign, and as such is first encountered in that campaign's first scenario. A leader of the Ampost Nightwatch, Ernest is calm, level-headed, and a tactical thinker--important qualities in a society with little interest in warfare when it becomes faced with violent aggression. It falls to Ernest to rally his people and lead them back onto the world stage, as he tries to uncover what is driving the world to try and find the long-lost halflings.

Fai Dural Dzirikon[]

Fai Dural Dzirikon is encountered in the final scenario of the Elven Court and Commonwealth campaigns. Charismatic and many-faceted, Fai Dural holds nearly as much sway among the disparate Draconians as Reskar, and convinces a large chunk of them to follow the Elven Court for reasons only known to her. She doesn't talk much.

When being discovered that she is in league with the Shadowborn faction, her days are numbered when the hunt for those agents start by both leaders.

Firak the Roughskinned[]

Firic of Clan Eldur[]

Fjarnor of Clan Kaldur[]

Encountered in the first scenario of the Eternal Lords campaign, Fjarnor is a Warlord, and the "Guardian of the Great Glaciers". Being one of the High Queen's suitors, he is an enemy of Arvik the Dark. Despite this hostility, however, he is not without honour, as he has zero tolerance for anything that will put the Frostling people in danger.

Galendil Evorlas[]

Gamblag Master of Origins[]

Gamblag is the Master of Origins--leader of the Council of Origins, a meeting-council of all six races dedicated to maintaining the balance of life on Athla. He is old, powerful, and immensely wise, but a bit cratchety and slow to forgive. He blamed Sundren for treachery in which one his guests was attacked by Thannis, whom he killed along with his followers.

Grelka Greenclaw[]

Being a commander for the Commonwealth, she assists with enforcing the law and order of the Emperor onto unknown lands.

Groshak the Sharp-Edged[]

Groshak the Sharp-Edged leads a tribe of orcs in the remote region of Ralikesh. A powerful, self-taught sorcerer, Groshak holds a deep ire for the Commonwealth and a healthy appreciation for tradition and honor. He is also far-seeing enough, unlike his nephew Urlagh, to recognize that he can forward none of these goals without a little outside help.

Gustav Gorsmog[]

First encountered in the second Commonwealth and third Elven Court scenarios, Gustav Gorsmog is one of the Commonwealth's leading Dreadnoughts. He is in charge of the bulk of the great empire's industrial works, overseeing production in Xablor Province and research in the northern region of Hengevolt. Gustav is a firm believer in the dominance of technology and is very keen on developing ever greater technological advantages for the Commonwealth.

Ham Binger[]

Ham Binger is a legend among more than just the halflings--as an explorer and adventurer, he had great roles in the stories of old and his writings cover many of the world's great mysteries. A devout follower of the Allfather, Ham Binger appears in the Golden Realms campaign, bringing dire news to the colony of Ampost and leading his people on a charge back into the limelight. Jovial, compassionate, and incurably adventurous, Ham Binger is a hero to the core, and will likely be dead before he tires of the open road and the wild world.

Henna the Elder[]

Immanuit the Dancer[]

Isabella van Heldon[]

Encountered in the fourth scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Isabella van Heldon is a Commonwealth privateer in charge of setting up fleet operations in the remote Sapphire Archipelago. Playful and sadistic, she cares little for the Elven colonists already in the islands, seeing them as tools for advancing her plans. One way or another, she'll have to be dealt with. Isabella shares a last name with, and may be related to, Oscar van Heldon.

Ja'Vasqa Sunclaw[]

Julia of House Inioch[]

The queen of the Elven Court, Julia ruled the Wood Elves before the Mending reunited the Elven races. Today she governs side-by-side with her husband, Saridas, and acts as the healing, diplomatic influence on the Elven Court. Being good-hearted by nature, the advocates for peace and dialogue between all races, even when the humans seem to be unwilling to have any conversation at all. She is encountered in person in the sixth scenarios of the Elven Court and Commonwealth campaigns.

Jurwac the Loyal[]

Karl the Lich[]

Karl Hushwick[]

Encountered in the second scenario of the Golden Realms campaign, Karl Hushwick is a halfling member of the Order of Keepers, a secretive society charged with protecting a great secret in the jungles of New Aldor. Fiery and devoted, Hushwick stays behind to defend New Heartwood when it comes under attack, allying with the local nagas and vanishing into the jungle to continue fighting. But dark things lurk in the jungles, and not all of their monsters walk on four legs...

Laryssa Mirabilis[]

The niece of Emperor Leonus, Laryssa Mirabilis is a crucial figure in the Empire and a childhood friend of Edward Portsmith. She first appears in the first Commonwealth campaign scenario. Far-thinking, intelligent, and compassionate, she serves as a sound moderating influence to her dreadnought friend, and supports him on his mission into Brisska province. She has her own mission, to find artifacts from the lost Wizards, and what she finds could change the world forever.

Leana the Huntress[]

Leana the Huntress is a commander of the Elven Court's armies, and a personal confidant to the Elven King. She is first encountered in the fifth scenario of the Elven Court campaign. Leana is ferociously loyal to the Court and diligent in the extreme in her following of orders, and yet considered balanced and worldly enough to command a variety of races. When the King has a problem, Leana is his shield and his right hand.

Leonus Degrance[]

The Emperor of the Commonwealth, Leonus Degrance is one of the most powerful figures in the known world. Revered as a living god by many of his citizens, his ambition for progress and expansion--no matter the cost--drives the Commonwealth to constantly push its borders ever outward, clashing with the more sluggish Elven Court and gradually pushing the continent towards war. Leonus himself is an accomplished Dreadnought, and commands immense personal respect along with that accorded to his position. He is encountered at the ends of both the Commonwealth and Elven Court campaigns.

Lucian van Kesburgh[]

Lucian van Kesburgh is an Imperial Dreadnought assigned to the tropical Ralikesh region, and is encountered in the second scenario of the Elven Court campaign. Van Kesburgh is a dangerous individual, being both capable as a Dreadnought and quite racist against the "lesser species". He has no compunction about following orders, no matter how distasteful or bizarre they may seem.

Malchar the Body Snatcher[]

Malzua of Shyndra[]

Encountered in the first scenario of the Golden Realms campaign, Malzua of Shyndra runs a commune of draconians at the mouth of the Serpentine River. Her proximity to the halfling cities hasn't endeared them to her; Malzua hates civilization, with its foulness and disrespect for nature, and will resist any attempt to encroach on her lands with force.

Melenis the Risen[]

Few names invoke such dread as that of Melenis. During the first Age of Wonders she was a powerful wizard and wife of Meandor, who notoriously snuck into the heart of the Azrac lands and used an artifact known as the Horn of the Dead to overrun them with the undead. Melenis became one of the most powerful necromancers known, but was eventually struck down and her name slowly forgotten--but undead things have a nasty habit of coming back. Melenis is one of the most powerful magicians in the world today, with indomitable will and centuries of experience at manipulating events from behind the scenes. She first shows her hand in the first scenario of the Eternal Lords campaign.

Merlin[]

Exactly who Merlin is and what his past entails is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that he is an extremely powerful sorcerer, possessed of ample patience and indomitable will, and that he has story with both Julia and Saridas. Beyond that, only the man himself can say more, and he's not prone to talking.

Nomlik Trismegistus[]

First encountered in the second scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Nomlik Trismegistus is a priest of the Allfather, who resisted the deification of Emperor Leonus and was forced into exile as a result. He encounters Sundren and Reskar in the burning land of Ralikesh, and opts to aid her on her quest. A pious, humble man, Nomlik truly believes in the sanctity of all life and the ability to find redemption in anyone, and will go to great lengths to bring his message to the masses.

Odren Stablis[]

Oscar van Heldon[]

Encountered in the first scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Oscar van Heldon is a local lord in Brisska Province who has stirred up the province in rebellion against the god-Emperor, opting instead to lead the local populace in his "Cult of the Frozen Beauty". Arrogant and shrewd, Oscar is quite confident in his ability to resist the Emperor's novice commanders sent to quash him. He may be related to Isabella van Heldon, who he shares a surname with.

Pritarr the Crafty[]

Quoshka Roothealer[]

Encountered in the fifth scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Quoshka is something of a rarity--a druid, and a dwarf no less, in the service of the Commonwealth. She controls a portion of the isolated Rockshoal Isles, and has been charged with bringing the notoriously isolationist islands into the Commonwealth sphere. Little is known of her personality, but she appears to have a dislike for Rish Kyan the Red.

Rautar the Vile[]

Reskar Scapeshaper[]

First encountered in the first scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Reskar Scapeshaper is the leader of a large draconian tribe and the bearer of the Radiant Egg, an important artifact in their culture. He serves as the draconian representative at the Council of Origins. Reskar is deeply in touch with the natural world, and desires to preserve its beauty and power--a goal which puts him at odds with the Commonwealth. He cares deeply for his people, and anyone who helps him find their place in the world will have his eternal gratitude.

Rish Kyan the Red[]

First encountered in the fifth scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Rish Kyan the Red is an architect and warlord in service to the Elven Court. While highly capable on the battlefield, Rish Kyan is far from subtle and relatively easy to manipulate--though he remains a fast friend to those who help him and his people.

Roger Peacock[]

Encountered in the first scenario of the Golden Realms campaign, Roger Peacock is part of a family of halflings known and respected for their devotion to the Allfather. Roger himself is quiet and pious, believing the mission into New Aldor to be a task sent from Heaven and willing to do things normally outside his capability to see that it succeeds.

Roland the Famous[]

Rowlar the Warden[]

Sanhild the High Queen[]

Saridas of House Inioch[]

The king of the Elven Court, Saridas was warleader of the Dark Elves before the mending reunited the Elven races. Today he rules alongside his wife, Julia, and acts as the commanding, combative influence on the Elven Court. He can be said to be one of the most powerful figures in the known world, and in response to the constant, careless expansion of the Commonwealth has been inclining more and more towards war. Saridas cares deeply for his family, and deep down has a strong desire to make the world better for them. He is encountered at the end of the Elven Court and Commonwealth campaigns.

Shemet Atan[]

Shnaga the Pretty[]

Encountered in the second scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Shnaga the Pretty is a master manipulator who has set up a minor empire in the remote land of Ralikesh. While beautiful (by goblin standards), she is a black widow at heart, given to ensnaring and using powerful men in order to advance her own aims.

Sulthor Nightblade[]

First encountered in the fourth scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Sulthor is a mysterious figure in the Empire. It is known he has been agitating for peace between the two warring powers, but his full capabilities and intentions are unknown. Sulthor is willing and able to see the big picture in the greater conflict, and is not afraid to use tactics others might consider underhanded or heartless to achieve his ultimate goal of stopping the war peacibly.

Sundren of House Inioch[]

The hero of the Elven Court campaign, Sundren is the second child of Saridas and Julia, and the princess of the Elven Court. Feeling hamstrung by her position in society, she has turned to subterfuge and spying to gain an edge and carve out her own role in life. Sundren is rebellious, independent, and a little bit prejudiced, but this may just be inexperience--she has a great deal of compassion for her family, particularly her brother, Thannis, and picks up on concepts of command very quickly. She sneaks out to accompany Thannis to the Council of Origins, and quickly finds herself drawn into events far larger than she is used to...

Svengir the Golden[]

First encountered in the third scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Svengir the Golden cultivates the image of a friendly, unassuming man to hide his true nature--that of a scheming backstabber. He has an eye for value, and proves it by stealing the Oscillator Gem from Hengevolt--a plan which earns him the ire of the Commonwealth's up-and-coming commanders in the area.

Tannah Boslarf[]

Encountered in the second scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Tannah Boslarf leads a tribe of goblins in the blighted Nirvenkiln region. While no friend of the high elf Werlac who is setting up in the area, Tannah is somewhat distrustful of outsiders and willing to do anything to protect her tribe--even if it means underhanded methods.

Telgar Tarancalin[]

Thannis of House Inioch[]

The Crown Prince of the Elven Court, Thannis has been raised from birth into the role of leadership of that great empire and makes his first appearance in the first scenario of the Elven Court campaign. He does his best to not let it go to his head--generally level-headed and witty, Thannis is a popular commander and was selected to represent the High Elves on the Council of Origins. He has a close relationship with his sister, Sundren, and does his best to humor and understand her in her complicated position.

Urlagh the Unchained[]

Encountered in the second scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Urlagh the Unchained is an orc warlord who rules over the vast deserts of Ralikesh. Aggressive, confident, and boastful, Urlagh is well convinced of his own species' superiority and of his own ability to crush anyone who resists his might-makes-right rule. His weaknesses, as they are, are his racial prejudices, and his fondness for Shnaga the Pretty.

Valery of House Avernos[]

First encountered in the second scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Valery is a commander in the Imperial Watch, and has overcome great prejudice against her High Elf heritage to earn her position. Ferociously loyal to the Empire and its principles, she considers it her life's duty to serve the Emperor and advance the cause of racial equality--not least to rub it in the faces of those who said she couldn't be. She is a sound commander, but somewhat quick to anger--though just as able to admit when that anger was wrong.

Vontor the Shocking[]

Vontor the Shocking is an understudy of the Elven King, Saridas, and is encountered in the fifth scenario of the Elven Court campaign. A savant with fire and lightning, little is known about Vontor's personality due to his seclusion, but his presence on the frontlines means Saridas trusts him implicitly.

Voraditius Pontifex Maximus[]

Voraditius Pontifex Maximus is the leader of the Commonwealth's Cult of the Emperor, and is encountered in the third scenario of the Elven Court campaign. Wrathful, racist, and punitive, Voraditius rules over Xablor Province, the heart of the Commonwealth's industrial engine, and keeps its goblin populace in virtual slavery via indentured servitude--which he has convinced them is in their best interest. He drove Nomlik Trismegistus from Xablor, and the two are fiercely opposed. He serves as the human representative on the Council of Origins.

Wazuhl the Jagged[]

Serving as one of the Emperor's most trusted commanders, he is one of few under the direct command of Leonus. Trusted enough to be around him, serves to protect his personal interest and presence throughout Athla.

Werlac of Insaldur[]

First encountered in person in the second scenario of the Commonwealth campaign, Werlac of Insaldur is the primary advisor to Saridas, King of the Elven Court. A powerful sorcerer with a fascination with ancient artifacts, Werlac is also something of a puppetmaster, having supported the Cult of the Frozen Beauty from behind the scenes while conducting his own operations in Nirvenkiln. The true extent of his reach is unknown...

Outed as one of the main ringleaders of the Shadowborn faction, it is quickly found on the campaigns that he is not a common leader. While present with his own army, in reality most of it is but smoke and mirrors, as his Throne City will be nowhere on the place where he makes presence.

Xorn the Disciplined[]

Encountered in the sixth scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Xorn the Disciplined is a warlord-for-hire who has come into the service of the Elven Court. Little concrete is known about him; however, his reliability is unquestionable, and if his nom de guerre is any indication, his ability to hold normally riotous orcs in line is unsurpassed.

Yzzo the Rat[]

First encountered in the first scenario of the Elven Court campaign, Yzzo the Rat is a goblin commander in the service of the Commonwealth, who serves as the goblin representative at the Council of Origins. Self-confident and conniving, he is the consummate rogue--unrepentantly given to plotting and backstabbing to advance his causes, which even his supposed masters may not know. Outed as a Shadowborn thanks to Isabella's notes, his days were numbered at the Commonwealth.

Zerti the Sleek[]

As a commander for the Elven Court, she is assisting Rish Kyan the Red on the court's presence on the Sapphire Islands. Not much else is known about her, other than the fact that she is not as trustworthy to Rish Kyan as it seems.
